Ileana,
Sorry to be so blunt, but it is the cycle that shows how Carbon is recycled in the Biosphere. You can follow it as Carbon Dioxide gas and see it go through plants during ‘photosynthesis’. After that, some is eaten by animals that use the stored Carbon in plant sugars as energy during ‘respiration’.
Animals release carbon back into the atmosphere in the form of Carbon Dioxide gas and then the cycle begins again. (that is a very simple example of the process) Please see the notes for more detail . you may also want to ‘google it’

Biology HP kids~
It would be a good idea to familiarize yourself with Chapters 1 – 6 for tomorrow’s exam
Regarding the 1st Essay Question:
****************************
>Answer it completely in one huge paragraph if you can. When you talk about writing to the professor, just mention “what you would write to him” (don’t actually write a letter)
> Look at the Food Web diagram in chapter 3 of your book to see an example of what Essay #1 is talking about.
> Try to use the “suggested” terms in answering the essay. I chose those words because they are essential to understand for answering the essay question
Regarding the 2nd Essay Question:
*****************************
> Try to use the “suggested” terms in answering the essay. I chose those words because they are essential to understand for answering the essay question
Hope this helps! I will check back in a little while

Crysten,
You can answer the parts of the essay question in one, long paragraph. Essay answers do not need to be any special kind of format. Just show clear thought and understanding.

Yes, that is in the book in chapter 2 section 4. It is also in the power notes I did yesterday. There shouldn’t be more than one question dealing with chemical reactions though … you’ll be fine.

Mr. Tate, is hydrogen bonding the same as cohesion? ? ? ? (this essay question is making my brain want to explode

October 6, 2009 at 9:51 pm

For the microscope, just make sure you can identify the parts. I don’t have the handout that I gave in class today and if you want to see me before school or at lunch I can tell you which they were… it was pretty much all of them except for a couple.
October 6, 2009 at 9:47 pm

No, you don’t need to explain anything about animals on water… you just need to go into detail the “properties of water” that allow for surface tension.
As far as “surface film” … no idea Polly
October 6, 2009 at 9:47 pm
Crysten Dean, P1
water is cohesive cuz it’s polar, right?

what parts did you talk about? all of them?
October 6, 2009 at 9:42 pm

Celene,
You only need to know the “parts” of the microscope that I talked about during class today. Not what they do or anything.

r we going to have to label a light microscope?
October 6, 2009 at 9:39 pm

Charlotte,
Of course your father knows what surface tension is
I would like you to go into more detail about the “shape” of the water molecule and how ‘cohesion’ actually occurs, ok? And I will not post your entire answer on the blogs. This is for a question only please… I would prefer Not to read the same essay answer over and over again ….

Ok you guys…. how a blog works is you “read” the previous posts to see if there is a similar question to yours. Then, read more to see if the answer will suffice for you. If it does, great! If not, please rephrase the question.
For those of you that have “new” questions, I will be answering them in one moment…

my dad said that the answer to the second essay question
“surface tension is what causes the surface portion of liquid to be attracted to another surface. Because the shape of a water molecule, it gives it a positive and negative end and cause them to attract.”
is that correct and all your looking for?

Hey Mr.Tate…..Kay well i think i pretty much got the first question down And it”ll be no trouble its just the second question that is freaking me out!!
From what i think its saying is that we need to answer what surface tension is and aslo how the water molecule creates that situation…Can you please xplain?!

Get ready for this…. the flies lay their eggs on the meat. The eggs are very tiny and when they hatch, their larvae are maggots. The maggots eat their fill and then they pupate and become adult flies

Zhana & Crysten,
First of all, the essay “answers” need to be long enough to answer the question. You will receive one of the two essay questions at random tomorrow. You do need to know how to answer both and in any format you wish to write them. Drawing pictures to support your answer is also a good idea.
When you answer the first essay question about Redi’s experiment, explain it as if you were going to explain it to your parents. In fact, that would be a good idea. Read it and understand it and then try to explain it to someone at home. The better you explain the experiment and HOW it disproves the theory of spontaneous generation, the better chance you have of getting a perfect score on the essay

I want you to explain to me what surface tension is and explain HOW the bent, polar water molecule creates this environment.

Polly,

The blogs are more for specific questions regarding the test and/or essay questions. Sorry

Ileana,
Regarding the first essay question. You will need to read and understand, in detail, Redi’s experiment. I suggest drawing it and copying the entire Figure 1-8 on page 9.
Also, make sure you can clearly identify the variables in the experiment.

Hi mr. tate
soo…do we have to write a 5 paragraph essay tomorrow for the essay question??
October 6, 2009 at 7:16 pm
mrtate
Polly & Ryan ~
No, there will not be a question regarding Pasteur’s experiment on this test
Please read page 40 and 41 of your text. In the second paragraph on page 41 it says “cohesion also explains why some insects and spiders can walk on a pond’s surface”.
Think of the surface of the water like a “net” of molecules that have the water molecules sticking to one another. The net is fragile and can support the weight of small bugs and fast animals that don’t have much mass… but, the surface of water is like a net.
Hope this helps
