so the color we see
would be called visible light ??right :/
********************************************************
REPLY: Actually, not correct. The “visible light spectrum” refers to the very narrow range of radiation that humans are capable of detecting. That 380nm – 750nm wavelength range that contains the colors ROYGBV. All of that is “visible light” and the green pigment is the refracted wavelength from the “menu” of visible light that we have can perceive. Hope that made sense

Why is it that when we look at a leaf we see green instead of the absorbed colors??
***********************************
*didn’t mean to confuse … just a little philosophy*
REPLY: We cannot see what does not reach our eyes. Therefore, if red, orange, yellow, blue, and violet are ABSORBED, and green is reflected … the green wavelength is what reaches our eye. The “green wavelength” is then received by our eye and then we say that a leaf is “green”. Actually, when you think about it … what is color? And if leaves absorb red, blue, orange, yellow, and violet … then shouldn’t we say that they are all of those colors?

**APPLAUDS** Stephanie … you’re the winner!
I have not updated the schedule on the AP page since late November and NO ONE has said anything. I was wondering who I did it for and realized that I put in all that extra time for no one. Managing three websites along with all of the other commitments I have is a lot of work. It is worth it but, not when NO ONE looks at it. I would be happy to put the schedule up each week if I knew and believed that you guys used it. Let me know and before … but, I will only do it if several of you will use it and it can be verified.

it’s amazing when I was out on a hiking trip with a few of my friends, we were headed toward a beach without any tourists, just a local beach cove, and i looked up at the sky and it blew my mind just what I was looking at. Then after speaking to them for a few hours. One of them tell me how freakin crazy I think and how Naive I am. She she later sent me this link and told how I truly need to a Philosopher just not like this guy, I was told to be even better.

Hey Mr. Tate!
So I saw the powerpoint and i understand all of it, but what i don’t is the reason why blood O is not an acceptor. I mean it has no antigens… the only conclusion Ive come to is that because it has no antigens it sees everything else as foreign… I just don’t understand why it cant accept but it can give.
*****************************************************************
Tanya,
I have searched for a site that would give a clear answer to your question and I have not found one yet. I think you’re on the right track since our bodies are delicately balanced by what is considered ‘ours’ and foreign. Type O blood is actually supposed to be called “Type 0″ (zero) blood because it has zero antigens on its surface. That’s a fact and many college professors would miss that one on a trivia test. I was stunned when I found out! It does make sense though. I would imagine that a Type 0 person’s immune system would see any hemocytes containing anitgens as foreign and attack them. That is what I would go with
. Sorry it took me so long to reply… finals coming and I was hoping to find something for you after more than an hour of searching. Hope all is going well with you!

RE: “Introduction Paragraph and Which prompts do we write about?”
Know that BOTH prompts have crossover and blend into one another in many areas. The prompts, as I have mentioned multiple times, are starting points for your research. They are to guide you to the edge of a river of information with which you alone are to draw from and explore deeper. An AP student goes beyond the basics and demonstrates a deeper fundamental understanding of concepts in the subject he/she is working on.
A proper introduction paragraph gives the reader some clue as to what the literature is about and hooks the reader to want to read on. A great example of a hook paragraph would be the book cover to a really great novel like one of James Rollins’! Hook ‘em with your intro and dazzle ‘em with your conclusion! Remember, I want your conclusion to be AWESOME! And I want it to be 99% your thoughts, feelings, opinions, and understanding of the assignment!
I hope this helps

RE: “Do we write about ALL the animals?”
I would definitely like to see you cover the animals in the film, ALL of them. With regard to additional animals, I think it shows good research that you include some of the animals not mentioned or shown in the film. That will show me that you dug a little deeper and took the assignment a little more seriously. That can’t be a bad thing

I’m so sorry it took so long for me to finally get on the blogs.
But for that letter or recommendation if you can still do it for me, I guess just focus on what it is about me that would make them think I would do well. Also, mention how hard I’ve worked, or you think I’ve worked, to do well in school and why I deserve the scholarship.
Please and thank you again, Mr. Tate. I’m sorry for the lateness. :/

Dialysis tubing ….
The dialysis tubing replicates the cell membrane because it is semi-permeable and allows small molecules like glucose monomers and water through very small pores in the material. It does not allow larger molecules like starch through and that is what makes it semi-permeable.
Elaborate on that for your answer but, that is the main reason for the use of the dialysis tubing
~ Tate
November 26, 2010 at 5:38 pm
Ayana
tate, on the diffusion lab it asks why we use the dialysis tube for the cell membrane so i looked in the book and it said something about dye molecules in the water and a net movement….is that what i should put in the notebook?

mrtate
Michael,
The questions are very similar if not exactly the same as the ones you will see when performing the actual lab in the classroom. If you do not understand the question, it is possible you did not understand the lab. I suggest going back into the lab and looking deeper. You will also want to compare your notes and possibly the sections in the book that deal with these concepts. I know the questions are tough, they truly test your knowledge of the concepts. After you have researched, re-read, and gone through the lab give your best answer. I will not give you a “zero” grade if you clearly tried. If you don’t try, you will get a “zero” grade for that question.
I hope that helped, Michael … what do you think “Vaness”?

~*Online Lab Alternate Assignment*~
For those of you that are unable to log in and complete the labs assigned for the Thanksgiving Break, here is what you MUST have completed by Monday Nov. 29th. **You do not need to write down the questions BUT each questions MUST be properly labeled by Chapter and Page Number**
Scientific Inquiry Questions:
**********************
~ Chapters 3 – 9
> Pages: 57 (both), 67, 91, 123, 140, 159, & 180
Evolution Connection Questions:

> Pages: 67, 91, 123, 140, 159, & 180
Science, Tech & Society Questions:
***************************
~ Chapters 4 – 9
> Pages: 67, 91, 123, 140, 159, & 180
All in all there are 20 questions to answer. Many of these questions have multiple questions within the original. Make certain you answer everything. Not doing this assignment OR the online labs will have drastic effects on your grade. Don’t wait until the last night …..

By the way, NONE of you show that you have made marks in your notebooks for any of the labs! Make sure you complete the notebook and save it!
I will be posting an alternate assignment tonight for those of you that cannot log in to the online labs. That does not mean you will be exempt from them in the future, this just means you have to have a product completed by the end of Thanksgiving Break like everyone else.

After you successfully log in the “pop-up” that is the program is often blocked. Once you “allow pop-ups” from that site it will work BUT, you need to completely close the browser window and start over from the beginning. Ok?
Cyntia, I don’t know what to tell you
. I may have to assign some work from your book during the break after all. This internet thing is crazy!

Here is what everyone needs to do. Try to log in to the online labs BEFORE TUESDAY. That means call or text your friends and make sure they try to get in!! EVERYONE MUST blog in here as to whether or not they are able to get into the labs. If more than 3 people cannot, I will assign summaries for all of you. Mr. Tate I don’t really get what an anticodon does can you explain it??
Sure
…..
Well, first you must know that a codon is a specific, triplet sequence that codes for a single amino acid. mRNA has codons that specify certain amino acids because they match up with the anti-codon at the base of the tRNA molecule. Like a puzzle piece that fits perfectly, the anti-codon on tRNA compliments the codon of mRNA. For example, and mRNA codon containing the sequence UAU would fit perfectly with the anti-codon sequence AUA on a tRNA molecule.
Let me know if I should explain this further please

hey tate we all have a question and i hope you answer it soon.
does the RNA polymerase start and the the promoter start or do they start at the same time? and what type RNA is produced after transcription? (michael adkins typed this o and by the way i like the lanyard)
Answers:
********
> The promoter region is a specific sequence on the DNA strand that initiates transcription. Like a big flag waving around that says, “come get your transcription on right here!” This is true of Prokaryotes only! Eukaryote transcription requires transcription factors, special proteins that are stuck to the promoter sequence that act as a signal or “flag waving around” to initiate transcription. Prokaryotes don’t require the transcription factor proteins. (Compare the two Figures 17.7 & 17.8)
> Transcription produces all types of RNA. The usual suspects are rRNA, mRNA, tRNA but, as we learned in this chapter there are many different types of small RNA molecules that function all throughout the cell. Look at the last sentence on page 315. It says that “RNA polymerase synthesizes not only mRNA but also other types”. Keep reading onto page 316 and it will tell you about the three types of RNA polymerase used in Eukaryote cells (I, II, and III).
Hope this helps

RE: Introduction Paragraph
When you write an introductory paragraph you want to give the reader an idea of what it is you are writing about. “Introduce” the reader to your paper. So, you have to have some idea of how your paper is going to flow from beginning to end before you write the ‘beginning’.

Hey Mr. Tate
What type of things would I put in the intro paragraph for Judas Strain?
November 13, 2010 at 11:16 pm
mrtate
To answer all of your questions ….
No, I don’t want it to necessarily be 5 paragraphs. I want it to be complete. Your body paragraphs may be more than three. Think of it as One intro paragraph, several body paragraphs, and One conclusion paragraph.
You may want to mention the story of Marco Polo since it pertains to the main story of the novel in the Judas Strain and I would like it to be written in some kind of chronological order. The body paragraphs should flow in the order of the story and all of the plots with subplots.
Hope this helps

June,
Yes, I would like all of the characters mentioned and/or described. If they play a super small role then die, don’t worry about it. If a character is mentioned multiple times then you better give a full description for full points.
With regards to Quantum Theory, refer back to the beginning and throughout where they compare the research between the German scientists on Quantum Theory and Albert Einstein with atomic theory. The Westerners adopted one while Germany the other. The book also explains why. All of this revolves around “energy”. Energy has to be the number one commodity in the world today as it relates to ALL things in the modern world.
I hope this helps

Stephanie,
It does not have a length requirement. Just make sure you describe what the article is about, provide details and arguments given in their research, and summarize the overall goal of the article. Then, make sure you provide your own input, opinion, and feedback regarding all of the topics mentioned in the article. Think to yourself, “how has reading this information changed my life?” Think of it like a journal in a way. The more detailed and involved you get with it, the better your paper.
I hope this helps Steph

Is this a good intro paragraph for my analysis paper?
After reading the article “Reckless Medicine” I have a sense of what damage is being done to us patients on the United States. Medicine and special treatments are being given to doctors and they either don’t know any of the risks or they just don’t want to tell anybody about them. Since this happens, innocent people may get hurt or severely injured and they wouldn’t be like that if the doctors just told them the real risks. This shouldn’t be happening in the United States and it definitely shouldn’t be happening to innocent people.

Stephanie,
Yes you come here for help.
It mentions the 40% energy transferred in your book on page 174 in the bottom left paragraph.
If you remember the energy laws in that energy cannot be created or destroyed but, it can be transferred or transformed; then apply that to the steps of cellular respiration beginning with a single Glucose molecule as the fuel source – you must know that it is impossible to transfer 100% of the energy from its source to its end product. For example, your book says that a car converts about 25% of the hydrocarbon energy in gasoline to actual power to drive your vehicle. In an ecosystem, less than 10% of the energy from each trophic level is transferred to the level that consumes it. What is happening to most of this energy? It is lost as heat, entropy, to the environment or surroundings. Cellular respiration is amazingly efficient at 40%!!
Let me know if this does not help and I can rephrase or reiterate
~ Tate
October 21, 2010 at 7:38 pm
StephanieH.
Mr. Tate, do we come here for help for the cellular respiration test?
Well I have one question. There’s a question that says,
“Approxmately what percentage of the energy of glucose is transferred to storage in ATP as a result of the complete oxidation of glucose to CO2 and water in cellular respiration?”
The answer is 40%, but how?

I have put your Glycolysis exam in the grade book so make sure you see what an assignment of 50% weight does to your overall percentage. Congrats to Gabby and Jorge who received A’s on the Glycolysis Exam!! Way to go you two!
Your chapter 9 Cellular Respiration Exam is going to be moved back to Tuesday the 19th so that I can provide some more support on Monday. Make sure you treat the Cellular Respiration Exam with more reverence and respect than the last one so that your grade does not suffer again. Also, come to class on Monday with very specific questions regarding what you don’t understand so that I can fill in any gaps.
As for homework, you have two sections to summarize for Wednesday the 20th. Sections 11.1 and 11.3. I also expect you to turn in Section 12.2 on Friday the 22nd of Oct. The week following you have ALL of Chapter 27 (Prokaryotes) Due on Tuesday Oct. the 26th where you will also take the Prokaryotes Exam. Mr Tate, I’m confused of what exactly we’re suppose to have on the summary assignment that is due Monday. The thing that confused me is that you had us write down what the summary guidelines&expectations but you included for us to draw and label tables© all diagrams into notes? Do we include this in our summaries or was this just for our notes?

I don’t know, you did it for the investigation but not for the Graph It. My view is from a teacher’s perspective … is there anyone out there that can answer the question? How do you put your name on the Graph It and Investigation Assignments?
**Update** The last one you sent had your email but, still no name. I know it is you though because no one else is doing it … yet. Good job on the 100% by the way

Only 10 of 26 students have signed in to the online book. This is for a grade and those of you that haven’t even signed in will receive an ‘F’ grade in the gradebook for not doing so. I suggest you contact your classmates and remind them of my expectations.

Ayana,
I may have fixed the link. Try using it again with your username and password. LOGIN
If this new link doesn’t work you may need to go through the registration process again from the beginning and after you give your access code, choose the option that says you already have an account username and password. You are going to need to figure it out. Try also going into the “Tools” tab for your web browser and check the box “enabling 3rd party cookies”. Keep trying Ayana

That is a great question Lizbeth … I would like to open that up to the others in class and I also will ask you, “why do you think they have an advantage over smaller leafhoppers?”.
In answering this question, think about other animals and their body sizes. Then, think about how body size can be advantageous when chemicals or toxins are introduced to their habitat. You may want to think about it from the small leafhopper point of view as well. What disadvantages would smaller organisms have in a chemical laden environment?
I hope this cranks the gears in the cranium for you guys

You probably need to update your macromedia flash player. Are you using Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox?
If it prompts you to “install missing plugins” make sure you do so. That should fix it.
Perform a search for “Macromedia Flash Player” or “Adobe Flash Player” and you should be able to get it up and running after you update yours.
Let me know how it works out for you

AP Biology Summer Assignment for 2010
**********************************
Attention students, let me begin by saying welcome and thank you for checking the blogs. You should become accustomed to checking here often to communicate with me regarding anything to do with the class. I want to also let you know that the summer assignments being created are not mandatory but voluntary. I highly recommend them but, I am not going to require you do them. They will give you a head start in the class and also provide you with a “boost” in points following the first exam. The summer assignment is a tiered summer assignment. What does this mean? Well, you can choose to do the “easy” assignment, the moderate one, or the challenging one. They are incrementally worth more points. I have not decided whether or not I will award credit for doing more than one of the assignments yet. For now, you should narrow in one of the three. They are as follows:
1 – (easy) Define and draw a diagram showing the meaning of a list of vocabulary terms that will be uploaded to the AP Biology page of biotate
2 – (moderate) Put together a PowerPoint presentation on two of the multiple topics mentioned on the AP Biology page of biotate
3 – (challenging) Complete the assigned bookwork by checking out the Prentice Hall Biology text from the library and completing all of the assigned work detailed on the AP Biology page of biotate
**Note** The specifics will be updated either this week or this coming weekend due to a family vacation this week. Check often and message me here on the blogs if you have any specific questions
Thank you,
Mr. Tate
